But it’s a lot of hard work

Recently, I posted a thread asking users to give their personal pros and cons of starting a podcast. As someone who has been a guest on a few podcasts, I’ve realized I thoroughly enjoy sharing ideas and experiences and I’m curious what the process looks like in terms of getting started with a podcast of my own.

The feedback was overwhelmingly upbeat for the pros. Dozens of podcasters touting the positives in terms of building their brand, connecting with like-minded people, and creating a community through the curated rhetoric of their podcast.

Here’s what I found interesting, though. The cons consistently noted how podcasting is “time consuming” and “a lot of hard work”.

Call me crazy, but if I’m trying to build something or carry out a business idea, the baseline expectation is that it will be tons of hard work. And it will probably take loads of time. If I’m not working hard, I assume whatever the endeavor is will be fruitless. And this is not to be confused with being work addicted and never allowing a little down time. But at the bare minimum, I should be working hard. To me, that is not a con, but more so a crucial piece of the puzzle.

This concept applies to more than just job work. Think of your health, your fitness, your relationships, your mental well-being. If any one of those facets of life has taken a blow, it takes time and…wait for it…hard work for these things to improve.

And as I’ve stated in a previous newsletter, reframing the mental construct around what hard work is and viewing it in a more appreciative and positive light can really be a game changer. I don’t have to work hard, I get to!

Thank you for reading my rant. Really, I do understand where the feedback around the podcast question was coming from, but I just like to embrace diving headfirst into hard work and see what it brings.
