Nobody knows you exist
This one is for anyone who is trying to do their own thing.
If you’re a small business owner, aspiring content creator, podcaster, real estate agent, writer, window washer, or someone just looking for that ideal side hustle that’ll earn some extra cash - tune in for a second.
Nobody knows about you.
Not yet anyway.
I know it sounds a bit daunting and isolating, certainly not the positive mantra you want on repeat in your head. But remaining acutely aware of this fact can be the fuel that keeps the entrepreneurial fire burning long after you feel like putting it out.
Let me provide a personal example of how this became relevant in my business.
A year ago, I started my own physical therapy private practice. I was well known enough within my local gyms and by acquaintances around town that I could maintain a steady stream of patients. I wasn’t bursting at the seams by any means, but I was seeing good growth. And honestly, with keeping marketing and advertising at a bare minimum, I was sailing by.
Much to my satisfaction, patients got better! They didn’t need to come back. Good for them! But also, not so good for business.
Then it hit me - not that many people really know I exist.
Even though I was on Instagram every day, shouting into the ether about how I quit my job and started my own company, people around town simply weren’t aware of my presence. In retrospect, I think I was genuinely expecting new patients to materialize out of thin air and appear on my schedule. I’m a little embarrassed of it.
So what did I do? Strapped my work boots on and went marching.
And by that I mean I started going door to door, smiling and passing out handshakes at every local gym, provider, or healthcare professional I could think of that would value my services. I wore my branded shirts, passed out branded marketing materials, and sold myself so hard I would be a little sweaty from how nerve-racking it all was.
Believe it or not, this type of advertising made a difference. People started popping up on my schedule and it was a glorious feeling to reap a bit of what I’d sown.
Obviously, depending on your line of work, the specific mode of marketing will need to be altered to be effective. If you’re starting an online coaching service, going door to door at local mom and pop shops probably won’t cut it. Depending on your specific niche, go run a Google or Meta ad, post a video every day, create consistent quality content, start an email list, put yourself on a billboard. Whatever it takes to reach your targeted audience! The bottom line remains the same - get your name out there.
And then get it out again. And again. Ad nauseum. You should be so sick of telling people what you do and so efficient at your elevator pitch that you could say it backwards.
The point is - although you may feel as if you’re constantly mentioning your new gig, for everyone else it’s the very first time they’ve heard about it. And they likely need to hear about it at least 3 more times before they take any action.
I realize this little pep talk may seem stupid simple. But poor advertising can lead to poor outcomes which leads to you feeling poorly about yourself and ultimately ending up poor.
That is a joke. But hopefully, this excerpt has instilled a sense of direction in you if you’re feeling lost on your business endeavor. I’ve been there, and I’m still there half the time. Time to put a little pep in your step and not give up before you’ve even started.
Love,
Roni
