Why take supplements?

A few years ago, I would not have been caught dead taking a vitamin. To me, there was no need for it. I’m in my early twenties and everything is moving as grooving as it should, right?

But then I entered into the work force and became inundated with questions from patients regarding which supplements they should take. While I recognized my limitations in providing advice on this topic as I'm not a licensed dietician, I did want to further my knowledge so that I didn’t look like a buffoon with no brain cells when it came to nutrition.

Plus, I realized that modern-day food alone is likely not reaching all of my nutritional needs.

So I (and my husband) set off on a quest to find the best supplements. And by best, I mean the most pure, effective, and clinically researched products.

At this time, I almost exclusively use THORNE to supplement my daily needs. I honestly have found them to be the best company on the market for a few reasons.

Disclaimer: this is not a paid advertisement. They have no idea I’m writing this.

First off, their supplements are manufactured in-house at their campus in California. I love to support companies that aren’t outsourcing manufacturing and labor.

Secondly, their products are subject to 4 rounds of clinical testing at their in-house laboratories, as compared to the 2 required by the FDA. More testing = more opportunity to dispose of impurities. We love that.

Third, and potentially my favorite fact, their products are used in clinical research around the world. At any given time, numerous Thorne nutritional supplement products are being tested in clinical trials at institutions like Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These collaborations with independent researchers help them scientifically confirm the efficacy and safety of the products, which just makes me feel better about taking them.

So, now that you know why I love Thorne, I’ll delve into what I’m currently taking.

Whey Protein: no shock here I think. Despite the fact that I eat a pretty well-balanced diet, I know my protein intake is not sufficient for how much I like to lift weights!

Vitamin D 10,000 IU: Especially now that I’m not basking in the sun on the weekend, I love me some vitamin D. Plus, this product is formulated with vitamin D3, a more potent and better absorbed form than vitamin D2.

Methyl-Guard Plus: Helps maintain a healthy homocysteine level in the blood, which supports cardiovascular, cognitive, and bone health. Also, it’s been shown to support neurotransmitter production – natural chemicals that play an important role in nervous system functions, like attention, focus, mood, and sleep.

Creatine: I used to think if I had 1/4 tsp of creatine I would blow up like a balloon. Fortunately, I know better now! After a work out, I love creatine to improve muscle recovery, lean body mass, and cellular energy production. And no, not bloated at all.

Daily Greens: This unique greens powder formula combines the highest-quality sources of green nutrition with adaptogens that support a healthy stress response and adrenal function, as well as antioxidant blend that boosts the body’s defenses against oxidative damage and a mushroom blend that promotes optimal immune function <—- took that straight from their website. But really, tastes great in my morning protein shake and I feel ELECTRIC

So, now you have it. My daily intake, give or take. I currently also use the Momentous brand for Magnesium L-Threonate, although I’m sure Thorne’s Magnesium is equally as good.

I wrote this to spread the good word of good supplements. Thorne has about a hundred other products I did not mention, from bone and joint support, to amino acids, to hormone and health tests too. I care about my patients and my online followers alike, so I hope you learned something!
